Jatun Sacha Foundation
Research and conservation across Ecuador’s biodiverse ecosystems.
The Ecuadorian Rainforest, Home to Jatun Sacha
Ecuador, despite its small size, boasts an extraordinary diversity of flora and fauna due to its unique climate and geography. It is one of the world’s richest countries in species per unit of area and one of eight regions where valuable plants were first domesticated, now forming part of the global food and genetic resource inventory.
The country is home to approximately 25,000 vascular plant species, far surpassing the roughly 17,000 species found in North America. Animal diversity is equally remarkable, with at least 1,559 bird species, 2,433 vertebrates, 402 amphibians, 379 reptiles, and around 710 freshwater fish, not including the vast number of invertebrates, many of which remain undocumented..
Amid this incredible richness, Jatun Sacha plays a vital role in protecting Ecuador’s ecosystems. Through its reserves, research programs, and community initiatives, the foundation works to conserve species, restore habitats, and ensure that both nature and local communities thrive together.
